MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

MARSHA MCLEAN

September 2011

Welcome to fall!

Over the last several months, your City Council has been working on a myriad of projects, some of them long-standing that will provide significant enhancements for our city into the future.  In Old Town Newhall, we are well underway with construction of a new 30,000 square foot library in Old Town Newhall.  The state-of-the-art library will serve as a focal point for our Old Town, and with its children’s library, teen resource area, dozens of public use computers and public meeting areas, it will be a wonderful amenity for our city.  If you would like to see the “real time” progress of the library, check out our “Library construction-cam” on the City’s website at: http://www.santaclaritalibrary.com/.

On behalf of our Chamber of Commerce and the City, I would like to encourage you to attend the 27th Annual SCV Community Expo (also known as the Home and Business Expo) and Taste of Expo on September 16, 17 and 18 at the Santa Clarita Sports Complex, 20880 Centre Pointe Parkway, just off Golden Valley Road in Canyon Country.  Access is easy and central to the valley via the Cross-Valley Connector. Expo offers new and expanded parking adjacent to the event, along with complimentary shuttle service.

The Expo committee is pulling out all stops to attract the largest crowds ever: Free admission on Saturday and Sunday, free parking, complimentary shuttle service and expanded parking areas. In addition, College of the Canyons will host their fall job fair on site and Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital medical staff will administer free flu shots on Saturday for seniors and qualified caregivers. For more information on this great event, visit www.scvchamber.com.

One of my top priorities as your Mayor is reaching out to you, our residents.  I can be reached via email at: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  If you would like to meet, please contact my office at city hall at: 661.255.4395.  Your thoughts, ideas and suggestions are important to me and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Marsha McLean, Mayor

MESSAGE FROM THE CITY MANAGER KEN PULSKAMP

September 2011

Fall has arrived with all of the great City events you have come to know over the years.  Your City works hard to plan and implement events and programs that are family-friendly, informative and a great contributor to the amazing high quality of life we all enjoy.

On Saturday, September 17, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., the City will host its award-winning River Rally Cleanup & Environmental Expo.  The event is expected to draw large numbers of volunteers interested in helping remove trash and debris from the Santa Clara River.  The City will provide volunteers with snacks, water, and a small gift in appreciation for their service to the community.  This year, we will be cleaning near the Wiley Canyon area at theVia Princessa bridge.  River Rally is always a popular event for local scout troops, clubs, and other community service organizations.  More information is available through the City of Santa Clarita’s Environmental Services Division at 661-286-4098 or online at http://www.greensantaclarita.com/.

In an effort to help families, the City of Santa Clarita is proud to present its Teen Scene Unplugged on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at the Golden Valley High School theatre. The City of Santa Clarita’s Blue Ribbon Task Force is pleased to present a unique, dramatic, and thought-provoking presentation, entitled: “Navigating the Teenage Years.”  A Resource Fair (6-7pm) will precede the presentation (7-9pm). Parents are encouraged to bring their teens along. For more information about Teen Scene Unplugged, or about the Blue Ribbon Task Force, please contact the City 661-250-3708, or visit santa-clarita.com.

Finally, it is my pleasure to cordially invite you to attend our annual State of the City Luncheon event on October 13, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. at the Hyatt Grand Ballroom.  We have an interesting program planned and one I’m sure you will    enjoy.  Your $40 gets you a great lunch and a special, commemorative gift. For more information and to RSVP please visit our website at http://www.santa-clarita.com/  or by phone at 661-255-4939.

I hope that you and your family take the opportunity to attend these unique community events.  Thank you for your interest in the City of Santa Clarita.  It’s because of the tremendous involvement and support of our community that Santa Clarita continues to be one of the best places to live, work and play!

Sincerely,

Ken Pulskamp

Update from SCV Sheriff's office:

Please keep your garage door closed at all times when not in use.  Recently we have had an increased level of opportunity theft of garage items such as bikes and motorcycles which amounted to over $55,000 in losses to homeowners.

---------------------------------

There have been 2 recent incidents, one in Stevenson Ranch, where a man followed an older woman home after observing her withdraw money from an ATM.  He snatched her purse as she got out of her vehicle.  Being alert and aware should be top priority for everyone, especially older women.  Thanks.

Neighborhood Watch Meeting update:

The Neighborhood Watch Committee met in January and was joined by a Sheriff's Sergeant, CHP Officer, Station 124 Fire Department Captain and two of his team members, Animal Control and a representative from our Security company.  We also had a nice turn out from our residents.  Topics discussed as followed:

Coyotes: Coyotes have attacked animals in backyards and get into open trash cans.  Do not leave pet food or water out, secure your trash bins, and keep small pets inside to prevent coyotes from entering your property.  If seen, loud whistles and spraying them with water hoses will sometimes make them leave.  They are used to humans.  If there is a problem with a coyote, please contact the Fish and Game department for assistance at (909) 484-0167.

Do not encourage solicitors by engaging in conversation with them.  Ask them to leave immediately.  If there are any issues with solicitors, please contact our 24-hour security patrol at 661-255-7022.  If someone knocks on the door and you do not know them, the Sheriff's department reminds you to call out 'I'm busy, go away", thereby informing the person that someone is home.  If there is no answer, the person may assume that nobody is home and may try to gain access.

CHP has indicated that there is a speeding problem in Stevenson Ranch and a lot of reckless driving.  There were 1500 citations issued last year in The Ranch.  Slow down and be mindful of children and neighbors.

Fire Department Captain reminded us to please call 911 if someone you know is having a heart attack, stroke or needs emergency assistance.  Do not attempt to transport the individual to a medical facility - let the professionals assist.

Be on the lookout for people who may follow FedEx, UPS or other delivery trucks around, as they could be picking up parcels left at front doors.

The best advice is to always look out for your neighbors and report anything suspicious immediately by contacting our 24-hour security patrol at 661-255-7022 or 911 for emergencies.  And as a reminder, please continue to close and lock garages and all doors and do not leave items visible in vehicles.

Thanks.

Notes from the prior Neighborhood Watch meeting:

The Neighborhood Watch Committee met Tuesday, October 27 @ 7:00pm @ IHOP.  Betty Griffin, Chair, called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone.

All of the residents who were in attendance were honored to have as guests and participants in a Q & A session the following:  Patty Prime, Property Manager, Euclid Management, Sgt Wallace and Sgt Olfert from the Sheriff's Dept, Officer Proper of the CHP, Capt Peterson and his Station 124 Crew and Sgt Ayad of the Security Company.

Many thanks to our Law Enforcement for their outstanding service to our community and participation in our community events.  They take time to attend our meetings and keep us informed.  We appreciate this close rapport and do not take it for granted.  Many questions were asked and answered about Stevenson Ranch, Sunset Point and surrounding neighborhoods.  An informal discussion clarified many issues and the residents took full advantage of having in their midst first hand opportunity to have "one on ones" with the Sheriff's Dept, CHP and the Fire Dept.  Our 24/7 security company gave insight into typical patrols.

Main points of advice from Sheriff's Sgts was to keep doors locked, garage doors closed, vehicles locked with no items visible inside vehicles and not to engage solicitors in conversation.  If in doubt about person/persons, call Law Enforcement.

CHP cautioned about speeding or reckless driving and do not drive under the influence of alcohol or other substances and, also, to slow and be cautious when there is a flashing light.  Fire Dept. said our community looked good and cautioned residents to be aware of need to clear brush or to call them and they would take care of it.

Security patrols, observes and reports all streets 24/7.  Call to ask for their response for loud noise, suspicious vehicles or persons and they will assist in advising the proper person to contact, if it is outside their scope of duties.

It was a good meeting and appreciation to all who attended.   We encourage all residents to attend the Neighborhood Watch Meetings.  This is our opportunity to communicate directly with the California Highway Patrol, LA County Sheriff's Department,  Los Angeles County Fire Department, our local security company to discuss community security and safety issues.

Public Safety Announcement from the CHP
Bicyclists should always ride to the right of the roadway as often as possible. Bicyclists should be familiar with routes, constantly monitor surrounding traffic, and be observant of the environment; due to the increase in hit-and-run collisions.  Be observant and stop at incidents where you could be a good witness.

Thanks.

Byron Wong, CHP

--------------

As a reminder, Stevenson Ranch has a 24/7 private security company, which can be contacted at any time at 661-255-7022.

If you notice your children or others leaving the house with toilet tissue, tape (duct), laundry or dish soap, or eggs, please be vigilant and ask what they are going to do with these items as they currently are being used in nuisance instances or worse.

The Security Committee, with the backing of the HOA Board, works closely with Law Enforcement in our Community and would appreciate constructive feedback.

Also, please keep an eye out for your neighbors - do not allow newspapers to pile up, etc and report suspicious incidents to Law Enforcement and/or Security.

By taking a few precautions, you can greatly reduce the risk to yourself, and also discourage those who are intent on committing crime.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station officials are offering the following personal safety tips:

  • Always be alert and aware of the people around you, especially if you are alone or it is dark.
  • Educate yourself concerning prevention tactics.
  • Be aware of locations and situations which would make  you vulnerable to crime, such as alleys, dark parking lots, and remote unlit or sparsely traveled walkways and pathways.
  • Whenever possible, travel or walk with a friend.
  • Stay in well-lighted areas as much as possible.
  • Avoid doorways, bushes, and alleys where someone could hide.
  • Walk confidently, and at a steady pace.
  • Do not respond to conversation from strangers on the street when other risk factors are present, continue walking.
  • Don't set a pattern - use different routes of travel and varying times when walking, exercising, or leaving your house or place of business.
  • Immediately report suspicious activity or persons in your neighborhoods to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station.
  • Be a good witness - Try to get a vehicle license plate number. If you can't get the vehicle license plate number try to get as much identifying information about the vehicle or person as you can. Such as, color, make, model,  image, type of rims, stickers, etc. pertaining to vehicles. Clothing, scars, tattoos, oddities, etc. pertaining to people.
  • Take a cell phone picture or video of the person or vehicle if you can safely do so. Save/store the information in your phone or PDA.
  • Write down license plates of unfamiliar vehicles in your neighborhoods in case something comes of them at a later date. The information may solve a case should a crime be occurring.
  • Immediately call 9-1-1 and use your cell phone if you have one as a deterrent.
